North Kohala

North Kohala is the birthplace of King Kamehameha the Great, the first Hawaiian ruler to unite the Hawaiian Islands. There are six known Kamehameha statues, but the orginal statue is in Kapa'au town, just four miles west of the guest houses.

Kohala is the "Home of the Cowboys" and the first district outside of once Mexican owned California and Texas to have professionally trained cowboys from the 1830's. The district was also once a bustling sugar metropolis, encompassing five mill sites, a railroad system and the 22.5 mile Kohala Ditch water irrigation system, an engineering feat completed in 1907.

Pololu ValleyThe secluded village of Niulii (Little Coconut) where the guest houses are situated is near the end of the road, within 3 minutes from the stunning coral-colored cliffs of Keokea Beach Park and the majestic Pololu Valley with its scenic hiking trails and black sand beach. Bask in the sweet breath of the sun and inhale "Kamakani" the winds that travel across the Pacific, blowing life-waters onto the aina (land).

Keokea Beach ParkStroll through the quaint towns of Hawi, and Kapa'au and enjoy the many delightful art galleries and exotic cafes. Many renowed artists and musicians call Kohala home: David Gomes master guitar and ukulele builder, Greg Pontius master wood carver, National Treasure, Clyde Kindy Sproat, along with Grammy Award winner slack-key artist John Keawe who performs at least once monthly at the Bamboo Restaurant specializing in Pacific Rim Cuisine in downtown Hawi.
